Unfortunately he completely forgets to think about what happens with the people who don’t succeed in fulfilling their capitalistic dreams. Willy Looman always dreams of getting rich through the system and keeps on having this dream (lead by the example of his brother Ben). The exploitation of the average man and his depression is made even clearer in the end of the play, where Willy Looman commits suicide in order to provide his family with 20000$ from the insurance. He also shows how heartless and inhumane this business can be and how blind one (Willy) has to be in order not to get this. With this the author tries to show to the reader, what salesmanship is all about profit. With this scene Miller shows us how the average man is exploited by the system and thrown away in the end. But how should he, since he never got to know how hard life in the business world can be. Howard Wagner, the head of the company, who is much younger than Willy doesn’t care about his past at all and shows no empathy for him.

Willy Looman in this play embodies the average worker, who worked his whole life for the same company and who then gets fired, when he is no use for the company anymore. But what makes me and other people think that? And what does the play actually say about it? It is often claimed that Arthur Miller in this play criticizes the “american dream”. One topic with which Death of a Salesman is often connected with Capitalism.
